Seamus was “doing his time in the box,” as he referred to sitting in the chair outside the penthouse door, when his satellite phone rang. He eyed the number, then hit the button. “What’s up, mate?”

“La Fuerza attacked the Echevarria hacienda,” Beni told him through clenched teeth as Leo piloted the armored SUV down poorly-lit city streets at speeds far in excess of the posted limits. “Is Tina safe?”

“Perfectly. She’s back in the hotel after a bite out. No problems here.” He’d heard it enough times to recognize the sound of a man who’d just been in combat. “How bad?”

“They are alive and unharmed, but we lost two men.” A thought occurred to him. “And possibly Mérida, the cook.” Eddie and Rosita looked at each other, shocked that they’d forgotten about her. Rosita burst into sobs, then angrily waved Eddie away when he tried to comfort her. He looked stricken.

“Shite. You hurt, mate?”

“I will live. We are heading to the office. The hacienda is gone.”

“Gone? Gone, as in…?”

“Rockets, then fire. Gone.”

“Those wankers. So they came for him at the same time as the Oaxaca blow?” He frowned. Oaxaca, then the hacienda? Meanwhile, he was eating horrid Yank food and sitting on his arse. Bollocks. In exactly the wrong spot to see any action, that’s where he was. Exactly as he’d expected would happen. Not that he wanted anyone to make a run at the girl, but still.

Eddie reached forward and tapped Beni on the shoulder, waving his hand for the satellite phone. Beni handed it over. Eddie activated the speakerphone. “Tina,” he said to Seamus. “The office building is defensible, but I think perhaps it is safer for her away from me. I don’t think they’ll try again, but I never thought they’d try at all. It would have been easier to go after her if they were going to do that, verdad? Plus, she will not want to come.”

“I’ll throw her in a duffel and carry her home to you if that’s what you want, sir.” Seamus’ suggestion made Rosita smile.

Eddie traded a look with her, then said, “No, gracias. That penthouse is restricted access like my office tower, yes? And you have four men?”

“Five, including me, plus hotel security. Cameras everywhere and all around. We can keep the princess locked in the tower and feed her room service for a few weeks if we need to.”

Eddie looked at Rosita, who nodded. “Then she is as safe there as anywhere.” He handed the phone back to Beni in the front seat. Beni had his Tigre propped between his legs.

“I will call you later with more details; we are still on the road to Torre Cielo,” Beni told him.

“Roger that, keep your head on a swivel.”

As the sound died on the call, Seamus pulled his pistol from his holster and, keeping it in his fist on his lap, made a call with his left hand.

“¿Que?”

“Manny, bring me my backpack and all the boys, right quick. FRAP just made a run at Señor E, but bollocksed it up as usual, so we need to have a meeting.
